
Keynote Speaker: Mary Mincer Hansen, RN, PhD

Dr. Mary Mincer Hansen is a faculty member at Des Moines University with a joint appointment in the Masters of Public Health program and the Department of Global Health. She is the former Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health in the cabinet of Governor Vilsack. Prior to being appointed as Director of Public Health she was Associate Professor, Drake University, Department of Nursing; Director, Drake University Center for Health Issues; President, Iowa Public Health Foundation; and a Research Fellow on a Centers for Disease Prevention and Control patient safety grant at the Iowa Department of Public Health. Dr. Mincer Hansen has served in many national positions including Senator Harkin’s Nurse Advisory Committee; Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Advisory Committee for Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future; Council of State Governments Public Health Advisory Committee; and President of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. She has testified before the United States Congress on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness; as well as testifying before the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Pandemic Community Mitigation. In addition, she was Governor Vilsack’s designee to Governor Huckabee’s National Governor’s Association Chair’s Initiative - “Healthy America”- which focused on addressing the obesity epidemic in America. Dr Mincer Hansen also accompanied Governor Vilsack on his visit to China and while there met with Chinese public health leaders in Hebei Province and Beijing. She hosted 3 visits to Iowa by Chinese public health leaders. Her honors include Iowa Medical Society Community Contribution Award; Iowa Osteopathic Medical Society Professional Award; Title V Friend of Iowa’s Children Award; Iowa State University College of Human Sciences Alumni Achievement Award; Iowa Nurses Association Theresa Christy Award; Iowa State University Excellence in Research Award; Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; Phi Delta Kappa Education Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society.
